Sarah Bonnot at 4 Mayhouse Road
I am a self-taught artist, leaving secondary school with an A Grade Art & Design GCSE and not too much else of note, I went straight out to work - no college, no art courses, no degree in anything art related. I have always enjoyed painting, drawing and ‘making things’ and even as a youngster was more impressed with a tin of pencils than the latest toy. For many years I was shy about my creative work and for the most part my artwork took second place to my career development, professional studies and various fitness related hobbies. I’ve worked full time since leaving school at 16 and developed my career in Human Resources over the past ten years. Whilst working, I also studied, gaining several professional qualifications and achieving an M.A. in Personnel & Development. Having completed my studies, lovely free time returned and after years of academic pursuit I decided to reward myself by using the time to develop my creative talents. Recently I’ve been lucky enough to be able to reduce my day job by one day a fortnight – more time to paint!

Brighton born and raised, a number of my paintings are on a Brighton theme and I am influenced by the town scenery, my life growing up there and my family history.

I also create paintings inspired by the countryside, nature and my travels around the world, my artistic influences coming from Van Gogh and his post-impressionist contemporaries and in more sombre moments, Lowry. I paint mainly using acrylics but from time to time I venture into other mediums including pastels, charcoal, oils, crayons and pencil. My acrylic paintings are done on block style canvases and I continue the picture round onto all of the sides of the canvas.

Currently I am enjoying creating acrylic collage pieces of work (series entitled ‘Artists Block’) which involves painting with the addition of embellishments such as old jewellery, separately created shapes made from acrylic paint, craft materials and everyday small recycled household items. I create pieces depending on my inspiration at the time but I have also undertaken a number of commissions. I am also a keen amateur photographer and travel writer.
