Painting has taught me to look intently at my surroundings
and to see the unexpected aspects that are there. Winter twigs against the
sky, a surprising shadow effect, or a pattern; any of these could provide
the inspiration for an artwork. Often my work is created in response to landscape, both natural and manmade. The passing of time, which also changes the environment, also interests me. I paint in watercolours as I love the way the colours flow together to give unexpected but hoped for results; but I also use mixed media and strange found or collected recycled objects. Sometimes, if possible, I like the viewer to be able to be actively involved with an artwork, perhaps through touch, or by a box being opened, a page being turned or by contributing to the work. A recent installation encouraged people to walk over a work made up of 3000 eggshells. Seeing how people react to my work is interesting – a reaction is always better than no reaction. Whether it is found fun or thought provoking, intriguing or relaxing is rewarding to my sense of judgement to the success of a piece of art. Every painting or creation is made with care and great thought that I hope is of interest to other people. |
