The process of creating art brings an interest in my surroundings
and an awareness of changes. In daily life I am constantly looking for new
subjects and ideas that might be used to create a piece of artwork. Museums
and galleries, interesting in themselves, also show exhibitions that frequently
spark an idea and stimulate thoughts, providing inspiration.
I like change, so my style when painting, varies with subject, medium and mood. When using watercolours I often choose to paint realistically but from an unusual viewpoint - sometimes very close up, or at other times simply showing a part of the subject. Recently I have returned to using pastels, when I create a realistic image but exaggerating the colours that are important to me. When the medium is acrylics or mixed media, I make my pictures more abstract, often attracted by texture, colour and shapes. Subject matter is usually based on landscape and natural objects, or else chosen with a feeling of history in mind. A sense of belonging, both in place and time is important to me, with the realisation that what happened in the past may well affect us in the present. Another fascination of mine is that of books. I enjoy reading but also am attracted to the making of books. This in turn has resulted in my altering of books that are no longer wanted and turning them into sculptural objects. Creating one off artists’ books is another area I am currently exploring. |
