I studied Art and Design at Newton Park College of Education,
before spending my career in Primary Education (I really wanted to go to
Art School but was instructed to do something ‘useful’!) However,
as a primary teacher, creativity is in constant use and, being the Art and
Craft and later, Design Technology specialist, that creativity was used
to the full, not only in teaching but in the many design tasks that are
part of every Primary School. My work gave me an excellent grounding in
many Arts and Crafts skills, especially drawing, which influences my present
work. I became the Illustrator, for Flutewise magazine, in 1989, and have produced their covers and some interior illustrations quarterly ever since. On retirement, I was commissioned to design Special Needs Maths worksheets for Elmwood Press, and designed, wrote and illustrated 4 primary (Wizard Worksheets) and 4 secondary sets (Numberwise), which have proved popular. Since retirement I have also began to explore and develop my own skills and interests. I have worked with clay and stone to make sculptures based on the human form from life models, for which I used detailed drawing and photographs as well as direct observation, From that I started to experiment with a range of media to create 2D images. Recently I have specialised increasingly in Pastel, finding the combination of drawing and painting, suits my style. Although I sometimes produce landscapes, mainly I have extended my exploration of the human form to portraiture (both human and animal) and have completed several commissions for both.
